[1] It was common practice at the time for radio stations to have segregated
playlists. Thus, "Earth Angel," was simultaneously recorded by the white
group, The Crew-Cuts, in 1955. The Crew-Cuts cover peaked at #3 on the Hot
100 chart, five spots higher than the Penguins version (However the Penguin's
version went to #1 on the R&B charts for 3 weeks running). The
Crew-Cuts' made a successful career of recording crossover-friendly covers
of R&B hits.]
[2] The writing credits have been a source of dispute for years. Some say
Curtis Williams AND Jessie Belvin wrote the lyrics, others say just Williams.
(Hodge composed the music.) To play it safe, I listed both Belvin & Williams
as lyricists.]

birds (such as The Orioles, The Flamingos and The Crows). Bruce Tate smoked
Kool cigarettes, which, at the time, had "Willie the Penguin" as its cartoon
advertising character. They considered themselves "cool," and accordingly
decided to call themselves "The Penguins."]
