1 One of the Crystals' most impressive releases,
”Then He Kissed Me” was the follow-up to "Da Doo Ron Ron,
that perfectly showcased La La Brooks' fragile lead
vocals. Prior to La La's joining the group, Spector had
all but given up on the Crystals, preferring to let
Darlene Love & the Blossoms handle vocals on their
records. Brooks’ arrival, however, completely
revitalised the group and, had Spector not discovered
and fallen so heavily for the Ronettes, the Crystals
could easily have counted on any number of further,
equally impressive releases. The unique sound of "Then
He Kissed Me," was later revealed to have been a
complete mistake. The engineer, Larry Levine, was
trying to get the maximum volume out of the finished
take, so he duplicated the tracks onto one channel. But
later, for some reason, he erased the duplicate. The
echo of the duplicate bled over to the remaining track,
creating a sound that impressed even Spector, a man who
once asked in all seriousness, "Too much echo? What
does that mean?" The record-buying public was similarly
impressed and 'Then He Kissed Me" rose to #6 on the US
charts and #2 in the UK. In 2004, this song was #493 on
Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
