1 "Tach" is short for tachometer, an instrument that
measures the speed at which a mechanical device is
rotating. In this application, it measures the
revolutions per minute (RPMs) of the engine's drive
shaft. The driver of a dragster tries to keep the RPMs as
high as possible without going into the "red zone" on the
dial and burning up his engine.

2 "Strip" is short for drag-stip.

3 In the '60s, "short," was a slang term for a hot rod
with a relatively short wheelbase, compared with the
full-size cars of the day. A shorter wheelbase gave the
car a better center of gravity that made it easier to
gain speed.

4 A fuel injector puts fuel directly into the combustion
chamber of an engine in the form of a fine spray.
It could be set to maximzie power by adjusting the
fuel-to-air ratio entering the combustion chamber.

5 "Stingray" refers to a model of the Chevrolet
Corvette, a hot, highly desired car that first appeared
in 1953.

6 413 refers to the size of the Dodge engine's
combustion area. One of the sizes available in the '60s
was the 413 cubic centimeter engine, almost the largest
made by Dodge. For racers, the bigger the combustion
area, the more power and speed.

7 At some drag strips the starting mechanism for the
race was an electric light pole on which lights or
numbers flashed from top to bottom. When the lowest light
or number flashed the race began.

8 Drag racers stripped thier cars of excess weight so
the powerful engines could propel the car along faster.
It was not unheard of to remove all the seats, except the
driver's as well as anything else that wasn't "necessary."

9 Slicks are tires with no tread. They are typically
used in the rear, where the transmission generated the
most power. The slick had to be heated up by spinning
them in place in order to get better traction.

10 The power shift was a method of double-clutching the
transmission for a burst of speed each time the driver
shifted from one gear to the next.

11 A super-stock car was a stock car (as built by the
factory) that had been altered for racing, (such as
adding a fuel injector or specialized carburators to the
engine, heavy-duty parts to the transmission, and other
power-producing racing parts), but not enough to make it
illegal for street use.

12 Winding out means pushing the RPMs to the limit
before shiftng from one gear (lowest) to next, to gain
maximum power from the engine.

13 Sometimes, with the power behind the machine, and the
slicks on the rear wheels, traction was elusive. So the
method of trying to get the most traction was to keep the
pressure plate of the clutch "almost" engaged with the
transmission. Since the foot had to be kept on the clutch
for a longer period of time, it was called "riding the
clutch."

14 Because the driver was riding the clutch (see note
13) the pressure plate in the transmission would heat up,
thus the song refers to it "burining."

15 At this point in the song, the driver has shifted
through all the gears and has the gas pedal to the floor.

16 Dual Quads, refer to a set of two 4-barrel
carburetors on an intake manifold, aimed at increasing
air and fuel intake of the motor. Thus the allusion to
drinking in the fuel.

17 If the mass of air flowing through the engine can be
increased it will increase power. Increased air flow can
come from either an external device, such as a
supercharger, or by designing resonance into the manifold
systems. The Chrysler "Ram Induction" manifold is a
resonating manifold. The Dodge in this song has this
stock system built in.

18 "Shut Down" peaked at #3 in the U.S.
and #34 in the U.K.

19 The songwriting was originally credited to just
Wilson and Christian. Mike Love's name was added as a result
of a lawsuit filed by him against Wilson in the 1990s.
