It was in a camp in the scrub one day,
Just me and my old bush mate,
A scavenger hawk circled overhead,
A crow stood by to wait,
We cooked the rump & undercut
By slow and steady flames,
And with the smell and the tang upon the breeze
The closer, in they came.

Now I'm not a lover of the crafty crow,
Oh, he thinks one jump ahead,
Yeah, ya gotta be quick to nail this one,
With gun and flying lead,
And if five men should enter a house or hut
And four should wonder out,
Oh, that crafty crow would take a look
Until the last one ventured out.

Well we doctored up a tender steak,
And grinned from ear to ear,
A bit of this and a dash of that,
And assorted other gear,
Nothing cruel or fatal like,
Just a barrel of fun of course,
Like mustard, pepper, Holbrooks black,
And I splash of chilly sauce.

Well we placed that steak out on the flat,
And then sat down to wait,
Oh, he couldn't resist, that crow came in,
With an eager hopping gait,

And his head went down in a vicious thrust

Three mouthfuls slivered down his neck,

And headed for the tank,
And there he sat for about half an hour,

Well a hawk came down with razor beak
And quickly did devour,
And he took off like a tiger moth,
About a hundred miles an hour,
He scratched his neck while in full flight,
And came down on the bank,
To land beside that old black crow,
And they drank and they drank and they drank.

And now when remnants of the meal,
I throw em’ away each day,
Well that crafty crow stands all alone,
About 300 yards away,
And the hawk still circles overhead,
And the meat grows stale and rank,
Yeah they remember well that winter’s day,
When they drank and they drank and they drank.
