[1] "Fire & Rain" will probably always be regarded as James Taylor's
signature song. The title also serves as Billboard editor, Timothy White's
exhaustive biography of his friend, Taylor. The song went to #5 in 1970.

[2] The song was inspired by Taylor's stays at two Massachusetts hospitals.
One, the McClean Psychiatric Institute, where his parents had him committed
at age 17 because of his suicidal feelings. After his release and
graduation from high school, he went to New York where he acquired a
heroine addiction and then to London to try to kick the habit. Instead, he
wound up back in Massachusettes at Austin Riggs Hospital.

[5] In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine in 1972, Taylor says, "The
first verse is about my reactions to the death of a friend (Suzanne)...,"
who died from a heroine overdose while Taylor was in London.

[6] In the same interview as above [5] , Taylor recounts, "The second verse is
about my arrival in this country with a monkey on my back, and in that
verse, Jesus, is an expression of my desperation in trying to get through
the time when my body was aching and the time was at hand when I had to do
it..."

[7] Of the last verse, Taylor said, "...the third verse of the song refers
to my recuperation...which lasted about five months."

[8] Before going to London, Taylor had been playing guitar with the
now-legendary session man, Danny Kortchmar, in a band called, Flying
Machine, the lyric, "flying machines in pieces on the ground," refers to
the group's breakup after Kortchmar and Taylor left the band and relocated
to London.
